startups

two companies, one policy job, and a decade of finding out the hard way. i started at 22 with hardware and no money, and kept going until it worked.

i started classnotes because good learning material sat behind money that most students in my country did not have. it went from an idea to 35 million users and 50,000 people opening it every day.

i owned product strategy, execution and international expansion — 11 direct reports across engineering, ops, content and growth, monthly releases, and operations in the us, turkey and germany after raising vc funding.

we ran discovery on a 78,000-user analytics cohort and shipped experiments that lifted engagement time by 130%, migrated the platform for 11x faster page loads, and secured grants and partnerships with ukaid, the un and the eu.

of state selection

my first company, and the one that taught me physics does not negotiate. we designed and launched a connected lighting product for consumer electronics — spec, embedded firmware, cloud integration, and the manufacturing reality behind all of it.

i cut the prototype-to-production cycle by 300% by rebuilding the bom and designing for manufacturability instead of for the demo, and represented the product as an invited expert at texas a&m, the hult prize and austin startup week.

the us state department selected us for an international entrepreneurship exchange and acceleration at capital factory in austin — which is how i ended up in texas in the first place.

nine years in, here is what actually held up.

01

speed is the only real moat you get early.

we shipped weekly when competitors shipped quarterly. that gap compounds into users, and users are the only argument that ends debates.

02

hardware punishes you for guessing.

three years of pcbs and firmware taught me to prototype before i had an opinion. software people can hide behind a deploy; a board that does not work just sits there.

03

distribution beats the product more often than founders admit.

35 million users did not come from features. they came from grants, partnerships, press and showing up where the users already were.
